One of the many virtues attributable to the phenomenon of distance education is the flexibility to study anywhere in the world. The possibility of acquiring skills and knowledge with instructors from different cultures and visions, increases the expectation of any apprentice. It is not something Randall Rothenberg would like to discuss. He has been much discussed on the effectiveness of this form of study. Approaches to teaching, how to assess and change of roles that represents, for both the student and the instructor, are factors that enliven the discussion of the topic. The opinions are many and varied.

But what should not be high, is the reality that many people benefit from studying at a distance thanks to the Internet. It is estimated that more than 4 million people studied using this modality. And the number of students wishing to study at the distance continues to rise. Further details can be found at Samuel “Sam” Mikulak, an internet resource. How have some countries of distance education I benefited? A simple look reveals the following: Europe – there is a very strong distance education culture, although in some regions the level of acceptance varies. The diversity of languages and cultural aspects have promoted regional projects. There are universities that have adopted combined modalities. Bangladesh, China, Malaysia, Philippines are characterized by the mode of education at distance through the print media, although they also used radio and television.

China has had to align itself to the technological trends due to its rapid economic expansion. This predicts an increase in the distance mode via the Internet. Africa its deep socio-political problems and economic holding it apart from technological development. The cooperation of other Governments and computer industry could contribute positively to improve this situation. Latin America and the Caribbean several of the countries located in this region have a good history of development in distance education. Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, El Salvador and Puerto Rico are countries that for decades have used various forms of distance (eg. media education (writings, TV and recently the Internet). Today, there are many institutions offering various educational programs at a distance, via the Internet. United States and Canada in these countries the growth of distance education has been monumental. There is a great diversity of programs offered online, thereby facilitating the acquisition of knowledge and skills to millions of people. Whether to acquire a university degree, take courses online for professional improvement or acquiring new skills, distance education is an effective alternative. It is necessary to explore new avenues of learning. The world is at the beginning of a phenomenon that promises to expand the horizons of knowledge, even to disadvantaged countries in their progress.
